About Meningococcal disease
Meningococcal disease is a rare but serious illness caused by a number of different bacterial infections that are spread through respiratory discharge like kissing or coughing.
The bacteria inflames the membranes that cover the spinal cord and brain. Without quick treatment the disease can be fatal or cause serious harm and lead to permanent disabilities like brain damage and hearing loss.
Who’s at risk
Anyone, at any age can contract this disease, but infants less than one year old have a much higher risk.
Preventing the disease
Vaccinations are the best form of defence. Infants less than 12 months of age require 3 primary doses which may be given at the same time as their vaccinations on the National Immunisation Plan. A booster is also required at 12 months of age.
Your GP or immunisation provider will administer the immunisation.
